 Tarrifa like most coastal villages along the Spanish Mediterranean has a Castle , a monument worth a visit, it is known as Castle of Guzman el Bueno (“Good Guzman”)  and Was built in late 960 by the Ab d-ar-Rahman III Caliph of Cordoba, the Castle was built upon the ruins of a Roman military camp.

When Tarifa Was taken over by the king of Castile known as Sancho IV in 1292, the castle Was handed over to Alonso Perez de Guzman who was given the responsability to defend it. Perez de Guzman was named El Bueno which means “the Good” this knickname was given to him due to the fact that he refused to hand over the castle in 1296 to the rebellious brother of king Sancho, and the Marin ids, in exchange for the life of his son. The castle was closed due to its reconstruction and re-opened to tourists again in 2008, it is now used as the Tourist Information Centre and sometimes used for cultural events.


The San Mateo Church.

The San Mateo Church was originally built in the 16th century and is mostly late Gothic style with a 17th Century Baroque façade, The San Mateo Church was reconstructed in the 18th and 19th centuries and was made more of a renaissance style. If you visit the Church you will find stained glass windows  in the interior  and you will find a sculpture of San Mateo by Martinez Montanes as well as a tomb from the time of the Visigoths.


The Santa Catalina Castle.

The Santa Catalina castle was built in a privileged situation, it is 24 meters above the sea level, The Santa Catalina Castle was used as a fortress In the 19th century and during the second world war, heavily protected with several machine gun nests and bunkers. The castle lays upon a hill with the same name, on this hill was a chapel that Was reflected in Van Der Wyngaerdes painting in the 16th century.

The Santa Catalina Castle Until recently housed a weather Observatory that belonged to the National Institute of meteorology and one of the most important meteorological stations in Europe. Today The Santa Catalina Castle is abandoned and in danger of being demolished due to its poor state.


Whale and dolphin trips.

Within the months of April to October you can enjoy a daily 2-hour boat trip where you can watch various species of whales and different species of dolphins in its natural habitat such as common dolphins, striped dolphins, bottle nose dolphins and pilot whales. In the months of April to July in deeper waters of the strait you can see amazing mammals such as sperm whales. In July and August there are longer tours on offer to watch orcas near Tangier definitely worth its while, you might even be lucky enough to see fin whales.
