History of Puerto de Santa Maria

First of all, there are archaeological remains in the area of Puerto de Santa Maria from the Lower Palaeolithic era.

Furthermore, according to a legend, the foundation of the city was due to Menesheo. He was a leader of Athens who came here after the famous Trojan War and founded a city: Port of Menestheo.

Already in the time of the Roman Empire in the year 19 B.C. Lucius Cornelius Balbus ‘the Younger’ founded the ‘Portus Gaditanus’. This is the Roman port of Gades.

In the year 711 as soon as the Muslims arrived in the Iberian Peninsula there was a confrontation with the Visigothic army in the battle of Guadalete. From that moment on, Al Andalus was formed.

The reconquest by the Christians was in the year 1260 thanks to King Alfonso X, the Wise. Since then the city is called Santa María del Puerto. Since 1368 and until the 18th century, it has been living the period of its greatest days of glory. Christopher Columbus, between 1483 and 1486 lived in El Puerto and received contributions to undertake the first trip to America.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, El Puerto was a greenhouse and the base of the Royal Galleys and the headquarters of the General Captaincy of the Ocean Sea.

During the 18th century it has an important mercantile activity.

In the 19th century it was the headquarters of the French army during the War of Independence. During the period of the liberal triennium (1820-1823), El Puerto is again occupied and taken as the headquarters of the Hundred Thousand Sons of Saint Louis, with the aim of ending the liberal resistance sheltered in Cadiz and freeing King Ferdinand VII. Once the king was freed, he disembarked in El Puerto and imposed his absolute power.

Afterwards the successive disentailments and other historical factors provoke the expansion of the local economy and the urban space, marking the life and the people of this city.
