Lanjaron History
First of all, until the 13th century there is no record of any presence in Lanjaron. It is from this date that a group of Berber colonizers settled here. It is also possible that they were the ones who gave the name to the village. Which is surely a castellanization of “Al-lancharon”, “place of springs” in Arabic.
It is an augmentative formation in -on a form *lanjar. This is the same arabian adaptation (lal-angurun, langarun) of a collective abundant in -ar of the pre-Roman term, maybe celtic lancharon “place abundant in waters and springs or puddles”. But it is clear that the meaning of the place name is especially appropriate to the place.
It would be under Moslem rule until the fall of the Kingdom of Granada in 1492. Then it came under Castilian rule, but it is also true that the Muslims were allowed to stay in Lanjarón. And that permission would be the source of the most turbulent events in the history of Lanjaron. And this event is none other than the Rebellion of the Alpujarras of Granada, a rebellion of the Moors. These were the ancient Muslims who had been forcibly converted to Christianity. They rebelled at the end of 1568, in a vain attempt to recover their ancient customs and religion.
The Moorish Rebellion
On December 26, 1568, some 70 years after the fall of the Kingdom of Granada. The rebels arrived in Lanjaron and found the old Christians, brought to repopulate the kingdom, sheltered in the church, fearful of their fate. The rebels set fire to the church with 16 people inside, who all died apart from the building itself which was completely destroyed. But army troops sent by King Philip II under the command of his brother Don Juan of Austria ended the rebellion. There were no more such mournful events in Lanjaron and the life of the people continued peacefully to this day.
It is true that at the end of the 19th century some convulsions were recorded. However, these were due to natural causes, specifically earthquakes and cholera epidemics that devastated the area for some time.
Finally, the 20th century and industrialization entered, but did not stop at Lanjarón. Except for the water bottling plant, and the creation of the company Agua de Lanjarón. Besides, in the last third of the 20th century the tourism appeared in the village thanks mainly to its spas.
Climate

The driest month of the year is usually July. The average for this month is 6 mm. And the rainiest month is December because it has an average of 64 mm.
It must also be said that summers are short, hot, arid and mostly clear. In contrast to the winters which are long, cold and partially cloudy.
Also during the year, the temperature generally varies from 3 °C to 31 °C and rarely drops below 0 °C or rises above 34 °C.
For all these reasons we can say that the best time of the year to visit Lanjaron is probably from the end of June to the end of August

What to do in Lanjaron
First of all Lanjaron is part of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park. Because it is in the southwest of the same, being the door and entrance to the Alpujarra.
It is a town with a great amount of water springs that give it its prestige for its mineral-medicinal waters. That’s why it has a great tradition as a spa town. It also has many typical constructions with narrow streets and arcades to provide coolness in the summer months and shelter in the winter months.
Enjoy the spas and thermal water
The water and its spas are its main resources, the Spa, with its births of: la Salud I and II, spring of Salado and Capuchina. The latter is also mentioned in those words from Lorca to Falla:
“My mother has had strong hepatic colic and we had to come to Lanjarón in a hurry to drink this water from the Capuchia, which thanks to God has made it good with miraculous speed”.
The Spa is a majestic building, made of exposed brick with large windows and a classical ancestry. Moreover, here the visitors come to drink its waters, in the hall of ” the springs ” and to its graceful stays in the hall of ” Festivities “.
Drink water in their fountains and read their poetry
Besides, Lanjaron has innumerable fountains, along its streets, almost all of them with a poetry. This town is long and narrow, 700 m. above sea level, being horizontal and elongated the town. Because it is in a mountain with a great unevenness, since in only 15 km we pass from an altitude of 200 m. above sea level, in a constant and continuous ascending route, until the peak of the Caballo 3,011 m. of altitude.
Visit the parks
Because in Lanjaron there are several parks, all with lots of vegetation and big trees. Because in Lanjaron there is a lot of water all year round. At the beginning, the Adelfas Park. The one of the Salado next, is this one in the ravine of the same name, under the Balneario. And at the end, the one of the Lanjaron River, which goes down the ravine of the same name and with its source, as it could not be less.
Visit its castle
We can visit its Arabic castle, which is on a hill south of the village. Also with impressive views, both towards the village and the hill of the Horse, and towards the south. So from here you can see the Mediterranean Sea, between two mountains, Sierra de Lújar to the east and Sierra de los Guájares to the west.
Walking through its streets
We can also visit its streets decorated with flowers and pots everywhere, highlighting the Plaza de Santa Ana, Hondillo Street, the Avda. de la Alpujarra, the Plaza del Ayuntamiento and Calle Real. To finish at the end in the Lanjarón river, which descends from the high peaks of the Cerro del Caballo, to flow into the Izbor river.
And finally we cannot leave Lajarón without visiting the Honey Museum. It is next to the spa, in the Salado ravine in the middle of a wooded area.
Festivals and traditions
The town’s festivities are held around June 24, the day of San Juan el Bautista. They generally take place on the nearest weekend, in addition to the saint’s day itself. In these festivities the celebration on the night of San Juan stands out above all. Because although where it is usually celebrated this night is in the towns with beach. In Lanjarón the traditional “water race” is celebrated which contrasts with the general tradition of celebrating this night around the fire. In which everyone throws water into the streets from midnight onwards.
However, the patron saint of the village is Saint Sebastian, whose feast day is celebrated on 20 January with a procession.
Holy Week
As in all Andalusia, we must also highlight the Holy Week. Because at this time the Brotherhoods and Confraternities parade through the streets of the village.
Easter Wednesday with the Brotherhood of Jesús del Ecce-Homo and María Santísima de la Salud y Esperanza. Also on Holy Thursday with the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene. Good Friday with the Brotherhood of the Holy Sacrament and Holy Burial and the Brotherhood of Our Lady María Santísima de los Dolores y Soledad. In the early morning of Holy Saturday with the Brotherhood of Our Lady María Santísima de los Dolores y Soledad. And finally on Easter Sunday, the Procession of the Risen by the Brotherhoods and Brotherhoods of Lanjarón.
It was also the venue for the 13th Festival of Traditional Music of the Alpujarra in 1994.
It´s medicinal waters
If there is one thing this Alpujarra town is known for, it is the purity and benefits of the water that flows from its springs. Moreover, thanks to several television campaigns by Aguas de Lanjarón, it is inevitable to associate the name of the village with the water.
Because there are many springs, nourished by the snow of the Sierra Nevada, in this village.
Medicinal properties
First of all, the medicinal properties of the water of Lanjaron were discovered in the 18th century, and its exploitation began even a century later, already in the 19th century. Because the Duchess of Santoña, a Motrilian with interests in Lanjarón, took charge of it.
The duchess also ordered the construction of the building that has become the current building of the spa of Lanjarón. However, most of what can now be seen is due to the Carrillo family, but these were bourgeois not from Motril, but from Santa Fe, also in the province of Granada. They expanded their capital here. Later the spa passed through different owners.
In addition, as a complementary business, the water began to be bottled and sold. And this became the main activity that is done with the water of the village. Bottled water from Lanjarón was sold all over Spain. And leaving the spa activity as very secondary.
Finally, the Danone group acquired both the bottling company and the spa. This group totally divided the two activities, selling the spa to an investment group in which one of its own directors and the Andalusian Regional Government participate.
