History of Arriate
Arriate is a municipality in the province of Malaga which is part of the Serrania de Ronda.
First of all, the first document that exists about its existence is from 1570 in the Census of Felipe II. However, there is evidence that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Because remains have been found in the caves. These are caves that are on both sides of the Alcobacín River.

The warden of Cañete la Real came to the defence of that Arriate. But he left his own fortress defended by his son. Then the Arabs attacked Cañete and the warden’s son died. So in revenge, Hernando Arias set up an ambush in the Arriate mountains where he defeated the Arabs.
In 1630 the town of Arriate was separated from the municipality of Ronda. In 1635 it was reincorporated into Ronda again, and on 14th February 1661, by means of a deed signed in Madrid before the scribe of King Felipe IV, Arriate finally gained its independence.
