History of Baza

This city in the north of the province of Granada has existed since its foundation in the 4th century BC. It was also founded by the Iberians who had occupied this area since the Neolithic period.

We can also say that its name, Baza, comes from Basti, the name given to the city by the Romans. According to historians it is the continuation of the name by which it was known in the Iberian period. Because it was also the capital of the region, known as “Bastetania” or “Bastitania”.

In the Middle Ages the Muslims changed the name to “Medina Bastha” or “Batza” as Abd -el- Aziz wrote when he included Basti among the conquered cities.

The city of Baza was a very important place due to the remains that have been found in its surroundings (The Lady of Baza and the Warrior), especially of the Iberians. The arrival of the Roman Empire turned the city into a large commercial centre.

The Arabs settled here from 713 onwards. They built the walled enclosure to protect the city.

In the 12th century there were several crises and battles between different Muslim groups. First it was taken over by the Almohads, and then by the Nasrids in 1234, specifically by Ibn al Ahmar. He was the first Nasrid king of Granada.

Later, during the reign of Muhammad V, in the 14th century, the city reached its maximum splendour. But in 1489 it was reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs, entering into decline with the expulsion of the Moors.

But from the 16th century onwards Baza resurfaced and grew, both in number of inhabitants and in importance within the region. It also continued its urban development, but always respecting the medieval layout.
