The Phoenicians also arrived on these shores in the seventh and eighth centuries BC. Proof of this is the existence of some remains of Phoenician settlements. These encouraged trade, livestock and agriculture.
Later, the Romans arrived, of which there are still numerous vestiges in the coastal areas of Benalmádena.
And in the year 711 the Arabs arrived. To whom we owe the current name of the city. Because it comes from the Arabic “Ben al Madina” which means “Sons of the Mines”.
After the Reconquest by the Christians there was a dark period in the history of the town. Because this area was practically depopulated due to the fear of pirate attacks. On several occasions repopulation was attempted, but all with little success.
It was only in the 18th century that this place began to recover its population, due to the creation of several paper factories and social stabilization.
In addition, the growth of the industry continued until the 19th century. And a development of agriculture, especially of the vine, which becomes a monoculture in the whole area. At the beginning of the twentieth century the phylloxera plague produces a loss of all crops and an important economic decline.
But from the 60s of the century there is a total resurgence and growth of the city, thanks to the Boom of tourism in the Costa del Sol. Until today it is one of the most prosperous cities in the province of Malaga.
