Introduccion to Calahonda

Calahonda is an area on the Maálga coast between the municipalities of Mijas and Marbella. It owes its name to Calahonda beach, because the urbanizer, D. Juan de Orbaneja y Desvalls used it to name that area and the part of the urbanization in Marbella, Puerto Cabopino, later known as Calahonda, Sitio de Calahonda.

This urbanisation was built in 1963 and is the largest and most populated in the municipality of Mijas.

It is maintained thanks to the management and contribution of its owners with an annual budget to pay for the maintenance of the common areas ( pavements, asphalting, public lighting, cleaning, green area cleaning, fire plan …) by a board of directors composed of owners of the urbanization of different nationalities.

Some technical data

It is a larger urbanization than some towns in Spain. It also has more than 27 kilometres of streets, nearly 7000 houses, 600 000 square metres of green areas.

Most of its inhabitants are from outside Spain, being the predominant nationalities:

  • British.
  • Norwegians.
  • Swedes.
  • Germans.

It is located halfway between the towns of Fuengirola and Marbella, although it is under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Mijas. Except for Cabopino beach and its port which belong to Marbella.

Although the part of the urbanization closest to Marbella became independent and is now the Cabopino Urbanization.

Most of the 4,000,000 square metres of Calahonda are residential areas and golf courses. It also has three large shopping centres that house most of the restaurants, cafes and pubs in the town, as well as banks and supermarkets.

Calahonda Playa

Calahonda Beach is a beach between the municipalities of Mijas and Marbella. It is a semi-urban beach of golden sand between the port of Cabopino and the beach of El Bombo.

Its length is about 4 and a half kilometres with an average width of 25 metres. And during the summer it has a medium to high occupancy rate.

It is at the western end of the municipality of Mijas. It is also characterised by its golden sand, crystalline waters and moderate waves.

It has the title of Blue Flag thanks to its unquestionable quality. However, this beach does not have a promenade. But it does have many other services that make it an ideal place for a good day at the beach with the whole family.

Furthermore, within the beach itself we can distinguish different areas:

  • from the most urbanised areas, with homes and establishments nearby
  • even the most virgin, with abundant vegetation.

It is a fantastic place to practice some water sports such as fishing and diving.

Access to this beach is very easy on foot, by car or by bus. Because it also has free parking with surveillance. Besides to access it has:

  • access footbridges
  • cleaning service
  • bins
  • hammock rental
  • sunshades, nautical rentals

To get there by car it is through the Autovía del Mediterráneo. From Malaga, in the direction of Cadiz and, once you have passed the exit to Benalmádena, you will have to take the A-368 towards Mijas.

Coming from the West, it will also be by the AP-7 or the N-340 and you will exit by the A-386 towards Mijas.
