History

The first settlement was with the Phoenicians. Of which a necropolis is still preserved in the Ceregumil estate.

The current Caleta at the time of the Reconquest in 1487 was a settlement that the Moors called Trayaman. It extended along the entire southern strip from the River Algarrobo to the River Seco.

The history of Caleta de Vélez since the middle of the 17th century has had several owners. They either sold it or passed it on to their heirs. Among those who should be named: Melchor Polo, Don Blas Téllez de la Cueva. Afterwards, everything passed into the hands of Pedro Gerónimo de Vargas, a sailor merchant who lived in the Torre del Mar Castle. He transformed the area and planted vineyards. Then the maritime trade took off. Tons of sultanas were exported through the Torre del Mar and Pedro built up a large business which was completed by his son Juan Antonio Palomino y Vargas.

In the middle of the 19th century, most of the lands in what is now Caleta belonged to Pedro Domínguez Martín.

Next to the current Pilar stream to the north of the Torrox road, he built a salting house.

Later, in 1866, his sons sold those lands. And the construction of the road between 1866 and 1870, facilitated the construction of houses on its banks.

On the 14th April 1872 Francisco del Corral, a solicitor from Vélez, acquired some 10,000 m² of land there.

Therefore its birth is relatively recent, it began to develop from the layout of the coastal road. With the 20th century the fishing sector became particularly important

The history of its port is very short, the works began in 1972. With this construction, the area was revitalised and became the fishing centre of the region and the province.

Caleta de Velez Best restaurants

Caleta de Vélez is a place where there are numerous bars and restaurants where you can taste the typical fish of the area. In addition, on Saturday mornings there is always a flea market next to the Avenida de Andalucía. There are also several hotels with excellent services as well as a wide range of local shops where you can get everything you need. Here we present you two of the best restaurants.

 The Still Life

It is located in front of the Caleta de Vélez promenade. This is also a restaurant that specializes in home-cooked meals, meat and fish of the day.

It has a large terrace overlooking the promenade, which makes it an ideal place to spend a pleasant time with family and friends.

At Bodegón Caleta, it also brought the fashion of nickel-plated bucket bottles of beer to the village. And in terms of quality-price, it is a pretty economical place for a tourist site.

There is also a kind of “chiringuito” where we prepare barbecue meat to take away.

 Chiringuito Puerto Victoria

If you are looking to enjoy Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine, this is your restaurant. Because here they serve tender fish, perfectly prepared laing and generous salads.

Not forgetting their delicious coffee to close the lunch.

You will take away a good memory of this place, as it is well known for its great service and its friendly staff.
