Introduction and History
Carchuna is a coastal town which belongs to the municipality of Motril on the Costa Tropical. But it also includes the population centres of La Perla and La Chucha.
Carchuna is to the southeast of the town of Motril in the area known as Los Llanos de Carchuna. It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the south, the Sierra del Conjuro to the north, Cape Sacratif to the west and Calahonda to the east, as far as Farillo de Carchuna.
A bit of history of this place
This population has its origin with the settlement in Los Llanos. In which some small farmers formed the nucleus of the population that was settled. All this in the middle of the 20th century, which was helped by the agricultural warehouse built by Florentino Vázquez and his wife Marina Cortés de la Torre.
For this reason the first inhabitants of Carchuna came from various towns in the Alpujarra of Granada. Later the construction of houses was carried out by the Institute for Agrarian Reform and Development. In addition, immigration from both Europe and Africa has increased the number of inhabitants of this town in recent years, which is why there are now more than 2,000.
In 1974, the Institute for Agrarian Reform and Development completed the construction of a village that had been called “Colonial Village”. It is located right next to the old village. So the influx of population continues to grow dramatically.
Carchuna greenhouses (invernaderos)
The four kilometres of the beach of Carchuna, a district belonging to Motril, are surrounded by hundreds of greenhouses where all kinds of vegetables are grown.
So this area of the east coast of the province of Granada is free of some of the overwhelming presence of flat towers on the beachfront. Many bathers, visitors and residents appreciate this. Its large extension and the distance from the overcrowded municipalities of the west, make it an attractive place for those looking for quieter and more relaxing beaches.
But what do the greenhouses consist of? Because it is an intensive system of cultivation under plastic. It has been recently implanted in Motril, not more than 25 years ago.
Besides, it is important to point out that the surface of the greenhouses is of 1.220 hectares distributed between Carchuna and Motril 612 hectares. In the last five years, the area under winter has doubled, at an average rate of 80 hectares per year. The average surface area of the greenhouse plot is between six thousand square metres and eight thousand square metres. The average size of the plots is in line with the size of the profitable family farm, so the process of transformation to this crop is being easy and fast.
The average cost of transforming a hectare into a greenhouse, not including the soil, varies according to the topography of the land and the technology applied.
