History of Castell de Ferro

The sailor village of Castell de Ferro, which belongs to the municipality of Gualchos. It has a temperate subtropical climate that participates in the essences of the southern Mediterranean.

In addition to its historical past, the medieval castle, a watchtower that has dominated the beach for centuries, bears witness.

It must also be said that Castell de Ferro is right in the central part of the Granada Coast. Nowadays it is the municipal capital, that is why it is also the seat of the city council.

Castell de Ferro is between numerous small coves that dot the steep and rugged coast of Granada. Right on the slopes of the hill that crowns its old castle. In addition, its beaches are not overcrowded.

A bit of history of Castell de Ferro

After the famous Moorish Rebellion in the Alpujarra. Which led to their expulsion, Castell de Ferro disappeared. But at the end of the 18th century the inhabitants of Gualchos came to Castell de Ferro. That’s why it arose from the union of these with the families of the military garrison of the fortress, the current population center of Castell de Ferro.

Moreover, until the middle of the 18th century it depended on Motril together with the rest of the municipality of Gualchos.

In 1857 the municipality of Castell de Ferro was created. It was a segregation of Gualchos. However, just three years later, in 1860 it disappeared and became part of Gualchos again.

But during the last third of the 20th century it experienced a great economic prosperity thanks to the coastal tourism.

History of the name of Castell de Ferro

First of all there are two theories about the origin of the place name “Castell de Ferro”:

The first theory says that it comes from the Mozarabic Castil de Ferro (“Iron Castle”). This is the name by which the village was known until the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century, there was a great emigration of the inhabitants of the town towards Catalonia. They later returned. And that is why the change from “castil” to “castell” took place, due to the influence of the Catalan “castell”.

According to the other theory, Castell de Ferro comes from the autochthonous Mozarabic evolution, which preserves archaisms such as the non-diptongation of the Latin Ě.

La Rijana Beach

It is a spectacular paradise beach with turquoise waters. Which we can find near the Sotillo beach.

This peculiar beach also has a long history as well as fauna and flora worthy of note.

History of La Rijana Beach

First of all, historically this beach was a watering hole and a protection area for fishermen. In addition, it originally belonged to a walled defensive complex that surrounded the entire rock.

Here too, since the 5th century, boats arrived to load their holds with water. There have been cisterns since Roman times.

Both during the Middle Ages and after the Reconquest, the cisterns were still used. In addition to building the Torre de la Rijana, although at present only a few remains of the cistern are left next to the Torre de la Rijana, also known as the Torre de la Condenada.

Flora and Fauna of La Rijana Beach

The cliff has walls full of species of fish and other marine animals from shallow waters. This beach is set in a territory of large cliffs especially suitable for diving. This is because it is an area where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic are mixed, which creates habitats with special characteristics.

Under the waters of the Rijana we can find:

  • Parablennius pilicornis, in yellow, green and black colours.
  • Moonfish.
  • Octopus
  • Sea bass
  • Golden
  • Maidens
  • Groupers
  • Conger eels.
  • Moray eels.
  • Cathedral Sponge.
  • Anemonia sulcata.
  • Orange Coral.

It is also easy to see some herds of mountain goats in the surrounding ravine.

As for the vegetation and flora we can find:

  • Rhodalsine geniculata.
  • Cambronera.
  • Seaweed (Mesembryanthemum nodiflorum).
  • Sea fennel ( Crithmum maritimum).

For all these reasons it is considered a Special Conservation Area (SCA).

Popular festivals

Carnival

This is a solidarity Carnival, the proceeds of which are always allocated to a solidarity cause or an NGO. It is held at the end of February.

The magical night of San Juan

On the morning of 24 June every year, bonfires are lit on the beach to symbolically throw away old things and everything unpleasant. That has happened during the previous year. In addition, the inhabitants of Castell de Ferro go to the beach at night and eat, sing and drink and bathe in the sea. As a ritual they also jump over the bonfires to make a wish.

Celebrations of the Virgen del Carmen

As a good seafaring town, on 16 July it celebrates the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, the Virgen del Carmen. Also during these days of the fair there is a wide and amusing programme of events in which the parade of giants and bigheaded people and the parade of floats stand out.

But the most important thing that gives meaning to the festival is the sea procession of the Virgin. This is accompanied by fireworks, with flares and rockets coming out of the water.

Tourist Festival

The Fiesta del Turista in Gualchos, a traditional festival held in the second half of August. In which they pay homage to the first tourists of the sixties who chose this place to spend their holidays, crowning themselves as the tourist of the year.

San Cayetano Pilgrimage

San Cayetano pilgrimage in Jolucar on August 7. Thousands of people, year after year, make the “manda” or promise to walk all night until they reach the chapel of San Cayetano in the village of Jolucar to take the Saint out in procession.
