History of Istan
The Malaga town of Istán is located in the southwest of the province. At the foot of the coastal mountains that run parallel to the western coast of Malaga.
This special location due to its situation between the sea and the mountains gives it very peculiar characteristics. These have influenced the history, society and economy.
With the conquest of the Muslims in the Middle Ages they settled here. When a prosperous city. But after the Reconquest of Marbella by the Christian troops and after the general conversion of 1500 they made the Muslims leave for Africa. But during the rebellion in 1568, Istan was a Muslim stronghold. Fierce battles took place in its mountains, until the defeat of the Arboto Fort when they were subdued by the Duke of Arcos and later exiled to the interior of the Peninsula.
From 1570 onwards, a process of repopulation began with Christians who arrived in Istan from different parts of Spain. In addition, all the properties of the Moors were distributed among them. One of those groups came from the orchards of Murcia and spoke the panocho, a peculiarity that influenced the application of this genre to the natives of Istán from that moment on.
With this new settlement there was a total change in the town. In this way, a different way of life from the previous one began. And it is also the origin of the present Istan.
Interesting monuments to visit
They are located throughout the village and branch out to irrigate the different areas of orchards and terraces that are around it.
Of Muslim origin, the irrigation ditches were used to channel the water for irrigation and domestic use of the people. This construction represents a clear exponent of the level reached by the Arab people to channel the waters in favor of their human use.
The Arabs made the most of all the geographical features, building terraces where it seems impossible and bringing the necessary water for irrigation to them by means of an ingenious irrigation channel.
Water is the essential element of the landscape of Istan and forms part of its very essence.
Today, the irrigation channels continue to serve as water canals for the traditional irrigation of the orchards, constituting a network that runs through the subsoil of many streets in the town.
It is worth mentioning the so-called “Acequia del Chorro” whose route forms, from the source of the Molinos River, a walk of incredible natural beauty.
