History of Los Barrios
First of all, due to its strategic location near the Strait of Gibraltar there are settlements in the area since prehistoric times.
Then during the Middle Ages, in the place that occupies the Villa de Los Barrios, there was an alcaría or Muslim population. It was divided into two neighborhoods. However, it was later depopulated due to the advance of the Christian Reconquest and even the area of the Strait, for which reason its Arab name would disappear.
Unfortunately its Arab name is not mentioned in the itinerary of the monterías carried out by King Alfonso XI either. At the time he reconquered Algeciras in the 14th century.
Despite being evident, since the environment of the Alcaría was surrounded by pastures and crop lands that were not suitable for hunting. For this reason, years later the first Christian repopulators, not knowing the old Arabic name and observing that its remains were distributed between two nearby hills, began to call this area: two Neighbourhouds (Dos Barrios).
During the first years of Christianity it belonged to the House of Medina Sidonia and later, just at the beginning of the 16th century it became the property of the Crown.
Between the 16th and 17th centuries the area was colonized and agricultural and fishing activities were combined with shipbuilding. In any case it was not until the British occupied Gibraltar, 1704 when it acquired its own entity as some refugees from the Rock settled there. Its maximum splendor coincided with the reign of Charles III of Spain.
Today its municipal district is one of the largest in the province of Cadiz.
