History of Nueva Andalucia
Nueva Andalucía is one of the five districts that make up the municipality of Marbella. It must be said that this district has an area of urbanizations of luxury designed villas and flats, but all in traditional Andalusian style and accompanied by several golf courses.
A little bit of history
Its historical importance began in the 19th century. Because from 1831 to 1862 the El Ángel Foundry or Fábrica de Abajo was there and so the La Concepción Foundry lasted until 1884. They formed the blast furnaces of Marbella.
At the end of the 19th century, in 1881, the El Ángel Agricultural Colony was founded, promoted by the Malaga business association López, Janer, Cuadra y Compañía. It was used for the production of sugar cane.
This colony comprised 633 hectares, and was established on the purchase of the land of the latifundio La Campiña by Tomás Rodríguez Artola. The colony was completed with the acquisition or rental of other properties.
In 1883, a sugar factory was developed, taking advantage of the infrastructure of the La Concepción ironworks. It worked until 1903.
Also in 1883 two reservoirs were built, the Viejo del Ángel reservoir on the Benabolá stream and the Nuevo del Ángel or Las Tortugas reservoir on the El Ángel stream. This was an exponent of the agro-industrial culture of Andalusia in the 19th century.
Already in the middle of the 20th century, with the Law of National Centres and Areas of Tourist Interest of 1963, the Centre of National Tourist Interest was approved in 1964 to create 75,000 tourist places.
This was the first project in importance for approved tourist places. These works had exemptions and privileged financing to facilitate their development and to organize the tourist territories of Spain.
