History of Puerto Real

Prehistory and Ancient Age

Although the history of Puerto Real would begin with the foundation by the Catholic Kings. There is evidence of continuous human settlement since ancient times in the current municipality.

Foundation and Modern Age

The city as such was founded on June 18, 1483 by the Puebla Charter of the Catholic Kings. To provide the Crown with a seaport on the Gulf of Cadiz. The new town came under the jurisdiction of Jerez de la Frontera.

A year later, the Town Hall was constituted. A few years later, the town was given its own identity by being separated from the territory of Jerez.

From the 19th century to the present day

In 1797 Great Britain attacks Cadiz, and the population flees to Puerto Real. The overcrowding to which the population is forced to live causes them to suffer serious epidemics. Then came Napoleon’s invasion in the War of Independence, which razed the town to the ground and made it the headquarters of operations.

On 31st August 1823 the lands of Puerto Real were the scene of the Battle of Trocadero against the Hundred Thousand Sons of San Luis.

We would have to wait until the middle of the 19th century to see investment in the development of Puerto Real again. Moreover, at this time the first railway line of Andalusia was opened.

At the end of the 19th century Puerto Real experienced an industrial boom thanks to the creation of the seawall.

After the end of the military dictatorship, Puerto Real will again have a Democratic Town Hall, which was one of the first to demand the autonomy of Andalusia.
