History of San Fernando
Prehistory and Ancient Age:
In San Fernando we can find archaeological remains from prehistoric times. However it is not until the time of the Phoenicians when we can see a real development. Which built several temples and began with industrial activity.
In addition the Phoenicians founded Cadiz and the dependence of San Fernando of the capital of the province begins. Also a little later the Carthaginians and the Romans arrived, who established pottery industries and built an aqueduct on which later the Zuazo Bridge was built.
The Middle Ages
At this time the San Romualdo Castle was built, around which the future city of San Fernando grew. Furthermore, in 1264 the Castilian King Alfonso X the Wise took the Cadiz region from the Arabs.
After the creation of the Real Carenero, during the reign of the Catholic Kings. A period of prosperity began for the town, favoured by the commercial exchange with America.
Modern Age
The establishment of the Navy was also a decisive event for the city. Because with the arrival of new settlers, there was an important progress for the city, as much in the demographic thing as in the economic and cultural thing.
Two of the most important island monuments are due to the military, among others:
the Royal Institute and Observatory of the Navy.
the Arsenal de la Carraca and the Pantheon of Illustrious Sailors.
Contemporary Age
During the 17th and 18th centuries other important buildings were built in the town:
the imposing Town Hall.
almost all the churches.
the Castle of Sancti Petri.
the Royal Theatre of the Courts.
And it is in the Teatro de las Cortes, then called Teatro Cómico, where the most important event in the history of San Fernando took place:
The drafting of the first liberal Spanish constitution and the third in the world, the Spanish Constitution of 1812. From September 1810 to February 1811, while the Island of León was besieged by Napoleonic troops. Being at that time, along with Cadiz, the only bastion of Spanish resistance against the invader. The capital of Spain was located in San Fernando. Thanks to this fact, the town obtained the title of City and the name of San Fernando, in honour of the then monarch Fernando VII.
In 1823, the city was invaded by French troops in the service of the absolutist Fernando VII. Later the city was the scene of relevant events for the whole nation, such as the events that occurred during the Revolution of 1868 (La Gloriosa), when Admiral Juan Bautista Topete pronounced himself against the government of Isabel II, or during the First Republic, after the proclamation of the Canton of Cadiz, when serious clashes took place in the town between sailors and Republicans.
The 20th century began with a dark period for the island’s economy. Because there is a crisis in the naval industry, due to the loss of the last colonies. This fact led to the temporary closure of the shipyards of La Carraca. In addition, to the naval crisis were added those of the salt mines and the traps.
The two most important events for the city in the first half of the 20th century were the construction of the new headquarters of the Captaincy General. And the establishment in the Arsenal de la Carraca, in 1942, of the Empresa Nacional Bazán.
In the second half of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, the population growth of San Fernando has been quite remarkable. In spite of it the economic situation of the city is bad, due to the critical situation of the naval sector and to the nonexistence of other industries.
In 2008, with the approval of Law 8-08/PL-000003, San Fernando was included among the municipalities with large populations in Andalusia.
