Beaches in San Jose

The beach of Mónsul is the most famous of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata. Because it has appeared in a lot of movies and commercials. The reason is because of the eroded lava formations that surround it. Besides its fine golden sand and the crystalline water that bathes it. It is also characteristic for its Peineta (rocky cliff in the shape of a wave crest) of volcanic origin created millions of years ago and its dunes

In it, scenes from well-known international films have been shot, such as

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in the mythical scene where Sean Connery destroys a Nazi plane by scaring the gulls with an umbrella

  • The never-ending story
  • Bwana
  • Talk to her.
  • And advertisements from the Junta de Andalucía
  • Also the first video clip of David Bisbal Ave Maria
  • Tourner the page of the singer Zaho.

This beach is 400 meters long and its waters are totally crystalline. This makes it the ideal beach for water sports such as snorkelling. That’s why you can see the bottom perfectly and with total clarity the fish.

All this makes this town the ideal place to enjoy a sun and beach holiday with the family. Because the tranquility that you can breathe and its beautiful beaches will make us spend some great days.

In addition Pascual Madoz calls this beach of Monsú in his Geographical-Statistical-Historical Dictionary of Spain and its Overseas Possessions.

Los Genoveses Beach

The other famous beach in San Jose is the beach of the Genoese. Which is the most beautiful beach we can find. This is a virgin cove of fine golden sand that is located in the area of Campillo del Genovés. Which is a natural valley in which there are hardly any buildings or constructions. It is a totally natural beach.

The beach is very wide and extends for more than 1 kilometer occupying the whole bay. Just behind it there is a series of dunes in which the vegetation of the Cabo de Gata Natural Park grows. Such as prickly pears, pitas or agaves of high pitaco.

In addition, this beach is perfect to enjoy a swim with the family, since its entrance to the water is smooth and progressive. That’s why you have to go far inland for the water to cover you.

Films such as The Rat Patrol or The Wind and the Lion, Lawrence of Arabia, have also been shot here.

Also it is habitual that there are nudists, though this beach is not strictly nudist.

Festivals in San Jose

The Pirate Landing of San José year after year

First of all, it is known that St. Joseph’s Day is on March 19th, which is also Father’s Day. And of course this day is celebrated with special interest and a curious festival in the town of San José in the province of Almería.

And to celebrate it in the days following the event, a pirate landing like those of the 18th century is recreated on the coast of San José.

Because year after year, the desire for celebration and fun that San José lives year after year in a party that in 2020 would have been 10 years old. Because for the last 10 years the festival has been held on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of March and has been approved by thousands of visitors. It is now consolidated in Níjar’s calendar of festivals of tourist interest.

The whole town is involved in the recreation of what could have been a Pirate Landing. This initiative helps to boost the local economy, attracting tourists and curious people who want to have a good time in a family atmosphere.

Soldiers, pirates, and villagers all face each other on the beaches of San José during the Pirate Landing. Dressed as they were in the 18th century, they will give life to a fictitious corsair attack and the defence of the territory by the people.

But this is not the only festival in the district because during the first days of August. There is also the Fiesta del turista which is a popular festival with activities for everyone and nightly dance parties.

The famous San José Market on festival days:

On the promenade of San José, on the holidays, many handicraft stands are set up where you can find necklaces, bracelets, decorative objects and all kinds of products made by hand.

Mountain bike

First of all one of the most fun activities in San Jose is the mountain bike routes. Because they are a perfect way to combine sport and get to know the Natural Park.

 Genovese and Monsul by bike.

Due to traffic restrictions on these beaches, cycling is a great way to get around. Moreover, you don’t have to get up so early or stand in long queues waiting for the car barrier to open.

In the same village of San José there is a shop that rents mountain bikes. The rental, apart from including a mountain bike in perfect condition, includes a helmet, lock and puncture repair kit, all for a price of 20 euros for the full day or 15 euros for half a day.

There are also organised mountain bike routes around San Jose.

Although there are more routes here we propose a double.

San José – Vela Blanca – 19 Km

It is a linear route of 9.5 kilometres round trip with a drop of 200 metres.

We leave the car park at the entrance to San José and cross the village towards the south to reach the virgin beaches. When we start to climb the Vela Blanca, there is a fence that prevents cars from passing by. As we get higher we will have a magnificent view of this area of the Natural Park.

Once you have reached the top of the Vela Blanca, you can also descend from the other side of the mountain. In this case the difference in height will be 400 metres for going up and down the Vela Blanca twice, there and back.

The area of Cabo de Gata is also beautiful and it is worth going to the lighthouse, one of the most visited places by tourists, and see the Sirens Reef, which are ancient volcanic chimneys.
