History of San Roque
After the loss of Gibraltar from Spain to Britain in 1704 there were several unsuccessful attempts to regain it. The Spanish inhabitants of the city marched to another location near the Ermita de San Roque. It was San Roque that received the honours, titles and stamps of the lost city of Gibraltar.
The new municipality of San Roque became the same as the city of Gibraltar, except for the Rock. The capital of the municipality was established in the new town in the Cerro de San Roque, since 1706. Because at that time the first San Roque Town Hall was established. Then in 1755, the surface of the city was divided into three, giving rise to two new municipalities: Los Barrios and Algeciras.14 To San Roque corresponded all the oriental front of the old municipal term of Gibraltar, with exit to the Bay of Algeciras, the Mediterranean Sea and limiting with the neighboring province of Malaga.
Nowadays, San Roque is a city with an important industry in which the refinery of Gibraltar-San Roque stands out, as well as some plants of combined cycle.
Also the Ermita de San Roque has moved from its location. The original chapel has been converted into the Church of Santa Maria la Coronada.
In 2006, San Roque celebrated the third anniversary of its foundation. Just on the 21st of May, which was the official day of its foundation, a plenary session was held at the Town Hall, presided over by the Prince and Princess of Asturias Felipe de Borbón and Letizia Ortiz, and the President of the Junta de Andalucía. In this plenary session, Prince Felipe was distinguished as the perpetual Mayor of San Roque.
