History of Sancti Petri
The village of Sancti Petri is an old fishing village which belongs to the municipality of Chiclana de la Frontera. Its name means “of San Pedro”, patron saint of fishermen.
According to the remains found, it is thought that in ancient times there was a sanctuary to Melkart. It was visited by Julius Caesar himself.
A little bit of History
First of all, as we have already said, it was a Phoenician settlement. Where later the Temple of Hercules Gaditano was built. And later a castle was built which is currently being restored. The site was abandoned until the middle of the 20th century.
In 1959, the National Trap Consortium acquired the land and a period of great fishing activity began. That is why the settlement of fishermen around the Almadrabera industry, became a district of Chiclana de la Frontera. With a stable and seasonal population during the five months of the tuna season. The town even had a Barrio Mayor.
But from the 1970s onwards, tuna fishing became scarce and the National Trap Consortium was dissolved. The land then passed into the hands of the company Sancti Petri S.A. With no specific activity during this period, the village was gradually abandoned. In 1979 the Ministry of Defence expropriated the land until 1993.
During the years when it was owned by the Ministry of Defence, the village presented a ghostly appearance that was both beautiful and nostalgic. Many of its former neighbours still have the key to their house.
After the land expropriated from the Sancti Petri S.A. company was taken away from public use for military purposes by the Ministry of Defence, a complicated legal process was initiated. At present, it is still waiting to start the rehabilitation of the village. However, at the same time hotel business and the Sancti Petri Marina have been established.
