History of La Viñuela
La Viñuela was born in the 16th century from a sale. It still exists today. The place where this venta is located was known as “la Viñuela” because there was a small vineyard in its surroundings.
Around the inn other buildings were built until it became a village. In 1764 it had its first mayor, Mr. Juan Lucas García del Rey.
For this reason it is the newest of the towns of La Axarquía. However, this area was one of the first to be inhabited in La Axarquía. Because remains have been found from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Roman period.
There are deposits in the bed of the Guaro River, with remains from the Neolithic to the Roman period, including Bronze III. There are also adobe and cane huts, a bronze smelting furnace (unique in the province) and numerous lithic materials. Also noteworthy are the bell-shaped vessels and the decorative motifs on the fairing.
The Romans arrived later with their Romanisation. They also left their mark on the areas of the River Guaro. In the place that nowadays is the great Swamp of La Viñuela. There were a series of rural Villas, which shows an economic dependence very similar to the present one, with dependence on the olive tree, the vine and cereals. Historians believe that there never was a village as such, but there were rural villas similar to our cortijadas.
