History of Zahara de los Atunes
Like many coastal towns it has its origin in the time of the Phoenicians. However, until the 16th century there was no urban center. Its roots come, as its name indicates, from tuna fishing. Because it is one of the most important traps in Spain.
Because the almadraba is a type of traditional tuna fishing. It was already practiced during the Roman domination.
The first document in which there is evidence of the existence of Zahara is the testimony of accommodation of terms between Vejer and Tarifa in 1444.
For that reason its authentic origin like population takes place with the concession to Guzmán el Bueno to fish tunas of the strait. Privilege that will inherit their children, the Dukes of Medina Sidonia. Which would exploit the Zahara trap.
Then the Palace of the Piles was built in the early fifteenth century. Which later would be a key place in the history of this population. Because this palace had three functions:
- Defensive castle against Turkish-Berber piracy.
- Residential palace of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia while the trap season lasted.
- Chanca, that is, a factory where they cut up, salted and prepared the tuna.
As a curiosity, the Church of Carmen, which is in the center of town, was the room where the cutting and salting of tuna was done.
It is very likely that the location of Zahara de los Atunes as we know it today emerged in the thirteenth century. For more information on this issue, see the book Historia Propedéutica de Zahara de los Atunes, by Javier Trujillo Guirola.
